Japan Celebrates a Century of Amateur Radio

Date : 06 / 06 / 2026
Author : WIA Board

The Wireless Institute of Australia extends its congratulations to our colleagues in Japan as the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL)
begins an extraordinary 16-month celebration marking two major milestones in Japanese amateur radio history.
The celebrations commenced in June 2026 with the centenary of JARL itself and will continue through to September 2027,
when amateur radio in Japan celebrates 100 years since the licensing of station JXAX, regarded as the nation's first amateur radio station.

Rather than focusing solely on the past, JARL has adopted the theme "Because normal is just boring", reflecting the spirit of innovation,
experimentation and curiosity that has driven amateur radio for a century.
The centenary program has been designed as a bridge between amateur radio's rich heritage and its future, inviting radio amateurs,
manufacturers, clubs and organisations throughout Japan and around the world to participate in the celebrations.

The celebrations include a wide range of activities, including commemorative stations operating throughout Japan, a centenary ceremony,
a special commemorative publication documenting JARL's history, anniversary awards and contests, community participation projects,
crowdfunding initiatives and special centenary-themed Ham Fair events in both 2026 and 2027.

Of particular interest to DXers will be the nationwide commemorative operating program, providing opportunities for amateurs worldwide
to contact stations across all Japanese prefectures during the celebration period.

JARL was founded on 12 June 1926 by 37 pioneering Japanese amateurs and today remains one of the world's largest and most influential
amateur radio organisations.
As fellow members of the International Amateur Radio Union family, the WIA congratulates JARL and the Japanese amateur radio community
on reaching this remarkable milestone.

Readers interested in learning more about the centenary celebrations can visit the official JARL 100th Anniversary website at
JARL 100th Anniversary Website Link >> https://100th.jarl.org/en/pickup/

and follow the many activities planned during this historic year and beyond.

Again, congratulations to the JARL on reaching this milestone from your friends at the Wireless Institute of Australia.
